In
Quiché Department, Guatemala, lies a spectacular cloud
forest called Cerro El Amay. This undiscovered paradise
is home to the beautiful Resplendent Quetzal and the full
native fauna. But this forest is disappearing and needs
our help.
Each
village represents a glimmer of hope, so we work with
indigenous villagers to save their remaining cloud forest and
establish long-term plans that help sustain and enhance the
communities.
First,
we establish community-managed native tree plantations that
protect the fragile soil and eliminate the need for cutting
down the native forest for both firewood and building
materials. This also sequesters carbon to reduce greenhouse
gasses.
Second,
we promote the sustainable use of non-timber forest products
such as mimbre,
a beautiful aerial root suitable for baskets and mats,
helping to make conservation pay.
Third,
we are developing new skills in plantation forestry, and at
the same time, new outlooks for a brighter, sustainable
future.
